About The Race
THE HISTORY Originally started by Dr. Bob Lopez and a group of local runners, the race has evolved from the 1970s when it included a marathon run from Paul Smith’s to Lake Placid as well as a half-marathon run from Saranac Lake to Lake Placid. The North Elba Park District assumed the organization of the half marathon from 1984-2011. The 2012 race was almost cancelled, due to unfortunate state budgetary restrictions affecting the North Elba Park District, and the 40+ year history of the race was in jeopardy. A group of interested local individuals stepped forward and adopted the race…..and here we are!
THE PURPOSE A majority of your race entries and sponsorships are donated to local youth organizations that are dedicated to making a difference in the lives local young people. It's why we run! This year, we run to support Connecting Youth and Communities, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and their efforts in helping to keep our local kids healthy in spirit, mind, and body.

THE RACE The Lake Placid Classic is a friendly running event that takes participants through the beautiful village of Lake Placid during the spectacular early fall season. The starting line oozes with excitement, energetic music and plenty of pre-race activities to warm you up for your run. Once you cross the finish line enjoy music, food, and comparing race stories with new friends! This is a wonderful event the entire family can enjoy and a great reason for a fall weekend vacation in the Adirondacks. It is a USA Track and Field sanctioned race. Every registered runner will receive a long sleeved t-shirt. Every participant that crosses the finish line will receive a finishers medal, and lots of cheers!
The Lake Placid Classic, previously known as the Lake Placid / North Elba Half Marathon & 10K, is run on a relatively flat course with a few undulating hills through the historic Olympic Village of Lake Placid. The Start is in the front of the Olympic oval, proceeds around Mirror Lake and out past the Olympic Ski Jumps. As you approach mile 5, runners descend the course’s only significant hill (as you run down, remember, you will be coming back up this hill just as you near the finish line). Once down the hill, you will run out and back on the scenic River Road, with the half-marathon running along the AuSable River. The 10K turnaround is a half mile out on River Road. Will the leaves be changing color for this year’s race? We’ll welcome the participants to the finish line with music, cheering and fun! And oh, yes, we will have plenty of liquids and food to fill you back up after your great run.
What People Are Saying About the Lake Placid Classic
I LOVE this race because it is a wonderful time of the year to run in Lake Placid. The mountain air is crisp, cool and clean! The scenery is spectacular and you won’t find nicer people in the world. It’s a fun race on a fun course!
Lake Placid Classic is one of my favorite races. It's very well- organized, low stress, very friendly and happens at a time of year when one can enjoy beautiful fall running conditions with friendly locals cheering on the sidelines. Being from Lake Placid, myself, this race is special to me and close to my heart. The finish area at the horse show grounds is a great place to socialize and participate in post race fun. I love that you can choose between a 10k and a half marathon so there is something for everyone! The awards are so unique! I love that they are made from a cross section of an Adirondack tree.
The Lake Placid Classic features a scenic and memorable course that takes you from the historic Olympic skating oval to the Horseshow grounds. This event is easily one of my favorites! Best of all, proceeds go directly back to the Lake Placid community.
